Something Borrowed?

Something Old
Something New
Something Borrowed
Something Blue...

Every bride goes through this checklist multiple times leading up to their big day.  Singing it in your head, looking for things to fit the rhyme, everyone does.  Because if you don't, you might as well write off having a successful marriage, right?  Well at least that is what superstition leads us to believe and who are we to break this time honored tradition?

The most important thing to most brides is coming up with the best way to fulfill this rhyme.  While trolling the internet for the best way to fulfill my shopping addiction, I came upon  Rent The Runway.  Clearly, I joined in hopes that one day I would have a reason to rent and wear a $1,000 Herve Leger dress.  While that day has still not come, an interesting day has arrived, the day that Rent The Runway began to rent bridal accessories!

A new trend that has really caught on, is the addition of a sparkle belt to add a hint of bling to otherwise bling-less wedding dresses.  Rent The Runway currently has 3 different styles to choose from.  Considering they are $300 Badgley Mischka belts, the $50 cost to rent is really a steal.  They are the high-end accessory that every bride wants but few can afford.

Badgley Mischka "Say I Do" Belt
While the selection specifically for bridal accessories isn't that large, I can only imagine that it will grow in time.  The website has really expanded since I first signed up. They now have a For the Bride Boutique with dress options for your rehearsal or shower and all of the accessories in one place.

But, every bride doesn't need just "bridal accessories", they also have quite the jewelry selection. Bracelets, earrings, necklaces, they've got it all.  You can even have bridesmaids rent jewelry if you have a certain look in mind, but, few can afford to pay full price for the look.
Ben-Amun "Crystal Peacock Earrings"
The nicest part of the entire thing, is that you can have it for up to 8 days.  You simply put in the date you wish to receive it, and then send it back when you're done prior to the time being expired.  Although I haven't tired the rental process, I have yet to hear any complications about using the site.

While it's always nice to have something to keep from your wedding, I'm a firm believer that it should be something worth keeping AND using.  Sadly, there are limited uses for $300 sparkle belts beyond your wedding day.  But, Rent the Runway gives you the ability to have that day without the cost.  And when chances are you're already spending big bucks on your big day, saving at every chance really counts.

Good luck and Happy Heisting!

An ode to the way of the Weddington

Dear Weddington Way,

Thank you for your existence.  That day that I saw your ad on Facebook, I didn't know what you were but I was so intrigued I had to click it. Since that fateful day, I've talked to all of my brides about you and even have been using it for a few weddings I'm in.

Between college friends, home friends, family members, bridal party members are getting more and more spread  out across the country.  Weddington Way, you bring the bridesmaid dress store to me and everyone, where ever we are.

Your whole concept is pretty genius.  A virtual store?!  My mind is blown.  As an avid online shopper, you are a dream come true.  Brides are able to pick dresses that they like and put them in their own personal "showroom".  There are literally HUNDREDS of dresses to choice from.  All shapes, sizes, colors, lengths, fabrics, etc.  You have it all.  As far as bridesmaid dresses go, they're a wide variety of affordability.  When you're essentially making someone buy a dress, this level of availability is always nice.

Just when I think your ease and convenience is enough, you send me coupons. 10% off for everyone if 3 or more bridesmaids join?  You are just too much!

Then, Kathleen contacts me.  Kathleen, my personal stylist asking if she can help me.  COME ON!  You're too good.  Personal attention from an online shopping site?  What a great idea and so helpful!

You continue to shock me. I'm a bigger fan everyday.

Thank you for your existence and allowing others to heist via your blog and pinterest boards.

With love and admiration,
-Danielle

Discover the Great Outdoors

Whether you are outdoors-y or not, everyone can appreciate nature.  If you don't have a huge budget to spend on a decor budget, why not let nature be your decor?  For this idea, we turn to the Outdoor Wedding theory.  Living in the Northeast, we get all 4 seasons to play with.  Even if you don't live here your are more than welcome to use our seasons.

From personal experience, I've found that Fall is the new summer here in the Northeast.  The foliage is the perfect back drop for romance. The warm colors and cool breezes are ideal for swirling love in the air.  A nice thing is that it isn't technically "wedding season" so you can often get a good deal on venues.

However, if you're getting married in New England, the market of "the leafers" (as those seeking the beauty of the foliage are known as) can drive up the cost of a stay for your guests.  "Peak season" usually ends around Columbus Day weekend, however, there is still usually good foliage and decent weather after that weekend so an end of October date isn't a bad option.

There are tons of sites with locations for outdoor weddings.  Here are a few:

While an outdoor wedding can be beautiful  there are some important things to consider and be mindful of when planning to do so.  Here is a list, in no particular order:

1) Mother Nature does not care its your day:

If you are planning a wedding outside so that you can enjoy all that nature has to offer, be aware that you're playing by natures rules.  Rain, shine, snow, sleet, what have you, THE SHOW MUST GO ON!  This is why you need a back up plan.  Make sure that your venue has space available either inside the location or the ability to put up tents.  You should be sure to leave a line in your budget for a back up plan.  You don't want to have your wedding ruined because you spent the money on nice flowers instead of a tent.  Most party rental companies have them available.   If you're already renting things from them, adding on a tent shouldn't be too much extra. Which brings me to my next point...

2) Make sure your vendors are too legit that they won't quit:

For many of these outdoor locations you will need to hire outside vendors to bring EVERYTHING.  I would encourage you to find locations with great outdoor space and a majority of their own stuff on site.  If the location doesn't have things on site, they will frequently have a list of vendors they use.  While their vendors can be expensive, its an expense I encourage you to take.  These vendors know the location, have a good relationship with the venue, and have less of a chance of screwing you over in some way.  The venue would not suggest them if they didn't trust them on their property.  These recommended vendors have working relationships with the venues that they won't want to ruin, you're not the first person to get married there and won't be the last. They have a lot to lose and will probably be good to you.  The last thing you want to 2 days before your wedding finding out that the chairs you rented to save $300 from an outside vendor aren't coming any more.  This will cause you to scramble and end up having to pay more for such a short turn around time.

3) Seeing is believing:

Like with any location, you should be sure to visit the location. However, you should really go during the season you want to have your event.  This will require extra time but keep in mind that what it looks like on March 14th and September 14th are very different.  This really applies to those locations that you're choosing based on their seasonal appeal.  If you fall in love with something, you have to accept that the great outdoors will not always look the same.  But, if you can see it in its season you will get a better idea.  If time does not allow for this many venues will have photos for you to see, be sure to ask.  Go to the ceremony spot and pretend to sit where your guests will be seated.  You want to make sure that you like what they're going to see.  If not, then you should keep it in mind and when you have the space set up you can adapt for it.

4) Plan for uninvited guests:

When I say guests, I'm not talking about the conventional wedding crashers.  Having an outdoor wedding, the least of your worries is a stranger drinking your alcohol and eating your food.  I'm talking about the worst kinds: insects and temperature.  They are unwelcome in every way, but, if you prepare correctly, you will be ok.

The insect issue is a bigger deal in the summer than any other time. If you need to put a line in the budget to fund OFF Products then so be it. The last thing you want people to be saying is, "It was beautiful, but, I'm covered in mosquito bites".  One trick, is using citronella candles as whatever candles you were planning on using.  I would caution to make sure the scent isn't too strong.  Many of them can be over powering and you don't want to ruin the space with a stench of citronella.

Planning for the heat or cold is also important.  You can easily rent fans to cool things down, or heaters to warm things up.  The right temperature can make all the difference in your guests having a great time.  The same thing goes for the sun.  You don't want people straining themselves to see you when they're staring into the sun at the ceremony.  Providing inexpensive personalized sunglasses is a great option. (I'll go into more regarding fun favors at a later date)

These are just a few tips that I've come up with.  I very well may add to it in the future, so keep checking back. Here's to hoping you can Heist a great location and everyone cooperates.

Good luck and Happy Heisting!

Bargain Hunters Rejoice!

Many people believe my addiction to online shopping, should be intervened.  However, once I tell them the deals that I've been able to find they quickly re-evaluate that sentiment.  Online bargains don't end with your work suits or grill tools.  Let me show you how...

In the fashion revolution that is designer deal websites wedding fashion is always popping up.  One of my favorite sites out there is IDEELI On any given day, you can buy a Calvin Klein work dress for $40 and stainless steel spice rack for you kitchen for $25.  But, there are always special days when the Bride's Prize shows up.  Often times these sites have sales dedicated solely to bridal wears.  Everything from your Wedding dress to Mother of the Bride shoes are available.

Right now, on GILT you can find designer dresses for almost half price.  HALF PRICE WEDDING DRESSES?!?  If you think about it, you'd only get these kinds of deals during sample sales, and these dresses aren't from the rack after being tried on by 25 people. So you're thinking, "But, how can I buy this dress online?  What if I don't look good?"  If you already know what type of a dress fits you and you've tried dresses on already, but, can't see to find one you like, I encourage you to go ahead and take the plunge.  There's a good chance that with the money you can save on this dress alterations and tailoring can make it perfect for you.  Any dress you purchase will need to be tailored and altered regardless.  The only time this might not happen is if the dress is custom made and even then you might lose 5 pounds from the time it was made and will need it altered.

These sales don't just have dresses, you can find accessories, bridesmaid dresses, shoes, all of it.  The best way to be on top of these, is to just sign up for EVERYTHING.  Granted you may end up getting 5 extra emails a day.  But, it's worth it when you buy a $500 lace veil for $175.  These sites don't cost any money to register for, just a bit of time and dedication to combing through everything.

Not only can you get bridal wears, but, they usually even have things for the groom. A large portion of the male population have an adversity to shopping in general.  These sales/ sites can help ease the pain of doing that.  Or, you can even just email your groom a link and boom, he and his groomsmen all have designer cufflinks for the wedding.

Even if you don't buy anything, it is good to use these sites/ sales as a resource. It will allow you to see what is out there and what are the prices.  Some designer websites don't show you the prices of the dresses because the boutiques that sell them are able to price them however they'd like.  Like much of what you find on this blog, these sales can always be used as a learning tool.  Help expand your knowledge.  And if you happen to buy something for a steal, then you can put that in the win column.

Here's to hoping you can Heist a dress, a bird cage, or what ever you're in pursuit of.

Good luck and Happy Heisting!

An Introduction

Hello Everyone!

It seems necessary that I explain what this blog is.  While I do not know the excitement and anxiety that comes with engagement and wedding planning, I can say this, I know how to plan an event.  My endless spewing of wedding ideas to anyone that would listen is how this blog has developed.  I love nothing more than gathering ideas and bringing people together.  And thus, this blog was born.

When it comes to weddings, I'm a firm believer that if you do it right, you should only do it once.  That being said, it shouldn't be something that you need a prescription for Xanax to survive.  I have lots of ideas and I hope the this blog can help with that.  I encourage you to comment and ask me questions.  If imitation is the highest form of flattery, I thoroughly encourage you to Heist My Wedding.

Congratulations and Enjoy the Moment,

-Danielle
